‘I never thought police would knock on your door and come in and arrest you for being gay. I’m shocked!’
A 78-year-old gay man sat down with a gay boy 65 years younger in a beautiful and emotional video.
The release of the video coincides with 50 years since the decriminalization of homosexuality in the UK.
In it, 78-year-old Percy tells 13-year-old teen Louis what it was like growing up gay when it was illegal.
Percy says: ‘I think you’re so lucky the world has changed and you can just be yourself.’
He talks about sneaking out to gay clubs at the age of 16 and making fake names when they signed into clubs.
Then Percy reveals you could be jailed for being gay, with police even raiding the homes of same-sex couples.
He said: ‘You always had a slight suspicion that something could go wrong so you were never 100% at ease.’
At this point, Louis gasps. The teenager said: ‘Where you said you could get arrested, I never heard that before. I never thought police would knock on your door and come in and arrest you for being gay. It’s like a shock.
‘It amazes me how they could even just say for loving someone, you could be arrested. That completely shocks me,’ Louis adds.
Percy offers some words of wisdom at the end of the video: ‘Be true to yourself. Stand up for being gay and try to make people understand that the most important thing is that you can love somebody and it doesn’t matter who they are. Love is love.
‘Try to get people to think beyond their own immediate sphere so we can all be neighbors in the world and not have enemies and to be supportive,’ Percy added.
