Andy Cohen gets most attention as ‘Sexiest Diarist’
People Magazine’s new ‘Sexiest Man Alive!’ issue with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson on the cover touts ‘144 gorgeous guys’ featured overall.
Gorgeous they are – gay most are not.
An inspection of this year’s 190-page double issue shows that only Bravo TV personality Andy Cohen gets any kind of real attention sharing a third of a page with actors John Krasinski and Daniel Dae Kim.
Cohen has been named ‘Sexiest Diarist’ because he has just released the new book Superficial: More Adventures from the Andy Cohen Diaries.
His first volume was a best seller two years ago.
To see another gay face, you have to skip over to the ‘Sexy at Every Age’ where one man represents each year from the ages 20 through 59.
We can see Eddie Redmayne (34) and usual suspects Matt Damon (46), Rob Lowe (52) and Tom Cruise (54) in photos the size of the ones on your passport.
We see our gay representation at age 27: YouTube star Tyler Oakley.
Under ‘Perfect Pairs’ a few pages later, we see Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka at the top of a heap that includes the Clooneys and Jennifer Aniston with Justin Theroux, among others.
We then get Colton Haynes and Ricky Martin on the ‘No Shirt, No Problem’ page where they and other ‘ab-tastic men’ who show off their bodies on social media are featured.
And finally, openly gay Luxemboourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel makes the ‘World’s Sexiest Leaders’ page.
So by our count, that makes seven gays out of the 144 featured.
It’s not like the magazine doesn’t have plenty of very famous, attractive and relevant gay men to choose from.
Let’s mention dreamboats Matt Bomer, Anderson Cooper, Wentworth Miller, John Barrowman, Jussie Smollett, Cheyenne Jackson, Russell Tovey and Greg Louganis for starters.
Then there’s singers Frank Ocean and Adam Lambert, newsmen Thomas Roberts and Don Lemon, weatherman Sam Champion, TV producer Greg Berlanti, America’s Biggest Loser host Bob Harper, soccer player Robbie Rogers, and designer Nate Berkus.
Funny is also sexy so why not Sean Hayes, Jim Parsons or Jesse Tyler Ferguson?
If not them then what about sexually fluid guys like Nico Tortorella or Nyle DiMarco?
And let’s not forget actors Jonathan Groff, Conrad Ricamora (How to Get Away With Murder), Zachary Quinto and Broadway’s new Hamilton Javier Muñoz.
Let’s hope People, and its openly gay editor Jess Cagle, do better next year. Until then, here are five gay guys we think are very sexy and very alive:
