Street art by Sweden’s Carolina Falkholt has fiercely divided local residents
Residents and tourists to New York City’s Lower East Side were shocked, amused and perplexed by the arrival of some new street art on Christmas Eve.
Respected Swedish artist Carolina Falkholt painted a 50-foot high penis on the side of a building on Broome Street. Such a prominent piece of art was sure to generate plenty of reaction.
The artist herself posted an image of the work on her Instagram, saying: ‘I have never heard so much laughter and seen so many happy faces behind my back when painting as for today doing this wall on Broome Street.’
Many have been impressed that she managed to paint the huge piece of art in New York’s currently freezing weather conditions.
However, for every person who loved the new piece of art, others made it clear they did not. Besides local residents whose windows directly overlooked the work complaining to the local media, others made it clear on Falkholt’s Instagram that they were not fans of her work.
‘You are a mentally sick piece of fucking shit,’ stated 2z017.
Another, damianburz, said the artist deserved ‘to be in jail.’
‘None of your work is about sexual awareness,’ said tsiridium. ‘There are people who live in this neighborhood having to explain why an ugly giant purple dick is on the side of a building to their kids. Your work isn’t genius. Just another self promoting smug OUTSIDER who never lived a day in the gritty LES [Lower East Side].’
Building’s landlord paints over Falkholt art
Unfortunately, for fans of the work, it didn’t last long. The artwork was yesterday painted over, on the orders of the building’s landlord. Although the work was commissioned by The New Allen street art foundation, permission had apparently not been sought from the building’s owners.
Falkholt is known for her paintings of female genitalia, but as she told The Guardian, ‘I usually paint giant vaginas, pussies and cunts, and since I had just finished one on the side of a five-story building, I felt like a dick was needed. The wall space on Broome was a perfect fit for it. To paraphrase [the artist] Judith Bernstein, if a dick can go into a woman, it can go up on a wall.’
With my Pussy vision I️ see through your talk. . The wall is finalized!! I am so happy!!! 56 Pike Street by the LES skate park. 7 days of monumental vagina painting in New York. . . . #pussypower #thenewallen @montanacans @montanacans_usa #thevaginationtour @newallen_ny #vagina #dick #snatch #cock #twat #penis #cunt #slit #work #hard #fuck #genitalia #streetart #graffitiart #metoo #notsurprised #sexualawareness #genderfluid #nonbinary #pride @iscp_nyc
The other painting that Falkholt is referring to is a giant mural of a vagina on nearby Pike Street. That artwork is a little more abstract and, as yet, remains up – although it is also receiving complaints.
