Sexual health advisors recommended PrEP should be used in conjunction with condoms.
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is anti-retroviral medication that you can take to minimize your chances of becoming infected with HIV.
The medication is available in the US, Australia and France, where it has changed the attitudes of some gay and bisexual men towards sex. Other countries are considering whether to make it available to those at risk of contracting HIV.
Health officials say that PrEP should be used in conjunction with condoms to help protect users from sexually transmitted infections – not just HIV.
However, some people on PrEP have made the decision to do away with condoms – particularly if their partner is also on PrEP or has an undetectable HIV viral load.
