A devastating new major survey of transgender people shows that 40% out of the 27,715 respondents have attempted suicide at least once in their lifetime.

That is nearly ten times the 4.6% attempted suicide rate among the entire US population.

One-third of the trans people in the anonymous online survey made public Thursday (8 December)  say they have been mistreated when they attempt to get medical care. Also, one in five (18%) who had contact with a medical professional about their gender identity reported that the professional tried to stop them from being transgender.

The figures was among the findings in the National Center for Transgender Equality’s 2015 US Transgender Survey which also looked at such things as discrimination, harassment, violence and employment of transgender people.

The data was compiled from among transgender people in US and three US territories as well as some military bases.

‘The report findings are devastating and unfortunately not surprising,’ said Victoria Rodriguez-Roldan, director of the National LGBTQ Task Force’s Trans/Gender Non-Conforming Justice Project.

Among the reports other findings:

  • 14% of transgender people — more than one in 10 – who disclosed their transgender identity to their family were sent to a professional to stop them from being transgender
  • At home, 10% of transgender people who were out to their immediate family report that a family member was violent towards them because they are transgender, and 8% were kicked out of their home.
  • At school, 54% of transgender people report being verbally harassed, 24% report being physically attacked, and 13% sexually assaulted.
  • 33% of transgender people who saw a health care provider had at least one negative experience related to being transgender, such as verbal harassment or refusal of treatment.
  • 33% report not going to a health care provider when they needed because they could not afford it.
  • In places of public accommodation, 31% of transgender people experienced at least one type of mistreatment in the past year, such as being denied equal treatment or service, verbally harassed, or physically attacked.
  • One in three transgender people (29%) report living in poverty, compared to 14% of the U.S. population.
  • 15% of transgender people report being unemployed, which is three times higher than the national average of 5%.

‘The rates of suicide attempts, poverty, unemployment, and violence must serve as an immediate call to action, and their reduction must be a priority,’ the report states. ‘Despite policy improvements over the last several years, it is clear that there is still much work ahead to ensure that transgender people can live without fear of discrimination and violence.’
