California may have to consider changing its nickname from The Golden State to the LGBT State.

In a new online poll, one in eight of 600 California registered voters surveyed identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

The numbers were even higher for millennials.

‘While this is only one survey, it used sound methodology to examine a statistically valid sample of California registered voters and demonstrates that LGBT people make up one of California’s largest voting blocs,’ observes Rick Zbur, executive director of Equality California.

Tulchin Research conducted the survey in January asking: ‘Are you a member of the LGBT community?’

Of the respondents between the ages of 18 and 29, a surprisingly high 16% answered yes.

Of those aged 40 and older, the number drops to 10%.

The statewide average is 12%.

It has traditionally been estimated that LGBT people comprise 4-10% of the general population.

The numbers were likely influenced on it being an online survey rather than by telephone.

‘We believe that allowing respondents to reply to this question online rather than providing a verbal answer to a stranger on the telephone can result in a higher response rate and in more forthcoming responses,’ state Ben Tulchin and Corey O’Neil of Tulchin Research.

California is the most populous state in the US and has the largest economy of all 50 states.

State Assemblymember Evan Low, chair of the California Legislative LGBT Caucus, says politicians should take note on these poll results.

‘LGBT people make up one of the largest voting blocs in California and our issues must not be ignored,’ he said.
