The Queermosa Awards will be the first LGBT award ceremony in Taiwan and will take place on 28 October, one day before Asia’s biggest Pride in Taipei.
According to the Queermosa site there are 271 LGBT characters on television in the US and the awards were created with the goal of bringing ‘broad media visibility to the people and companies working hard to have LGBT voices heard’.
The awards aim to acknowledge those who have used their voices and talents to be spokespeople for the LGBT community of Taiwan and Asia.
Queermosa has already attracted the support of various celebrities and some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry will be there, either as presenters, performers or nominees.
Ella, one-third of the super girl group S.H.E and ambassador of the Taiwan International Queer Film Festival (TIQFF) will also be a presenter. She says: ‘I know so many talented LGBT friends who don’t get the respect and kindness they deserve, at work or at home. I hope that with however little power I have, I can use my platform to raise awareness on the challenges they face and to shine some light on their stories.’
Among the nominees are pop divas a-MEI, Jolin Tsai, Golden bell winning host Kang-Yong Tsai who are up for the Generation Award.
Dee Hsu, Sodagreen, Mayday and Denise Ho are nominated for the Queer Icon Award for using their fanbase and platform to speak up for the LGBT community.
Other categories include Internet Phenomenon Award, Entrepreneur Award, Pioneer Award, LGBT-Friendly Business Award, Asia Pacific Short Film Award, Outstanding Chinese-Language TV Series Award, Outstanding Journalism Award and Outstanding Visual Design Award, for which the famous McDonald’s Acceptance commercial is also nominated.
The awards is will be held at the W Hotel in Taipei and will include performances by Ailing Tai, Eve Ai and HUSH
