The Equality House, painted in the rainbow colors, was attacked with homophobic graffiti and bullets this past Saturday (22 October).
Police are investigating after the rainbow house, which is opposite the ‘God Hates Fags’ Westboro Baptist Church, was plastered with the homophobic slur ‘fuk fags’ written in black paint.
Aaron Jackson, co-founder of Planting Peace, says he was asleep at the house and was awoken by ‘loud banging’ noises at around 1am on Saturday morning.
Phoning the police immediately, when officers arrived they searched the property they discovered the Pride flags were torn down and scattered in the street.
Police were called again on Monday when bullet holes and other damages were discovered by staff of the house.
‘The blatant acts of hate we experience at the Equality House mirror the acts of hate and discrimination our LGBT family experiences every day,’ Jackson told the New Civil Rights Movement.
‘Planting Peace has seen an increase in hate mail, death threats, and physical acts of vandalism and violence over the past three months. According to the FBI, the LGBT community is more likely to experience a hate crime than any other minority group.’
A Topeka Police spokesperson said it is likely the incident will be treated as a hate crime.
