Russia might ban FIFA 17 as rainbow kit for the players is ‘gay propaganda’

Will football players dressed in rainbow colors really make a child gay? We doubt it.

Russian politicians are calling on the FIFA 17 video game to be banned for violating the ‘gay propaganda’ law.

In a letter from Communist MPs to the communications oversight and state consumer protection agencies, they complain the game rated for all ages invites users to support a LGBT campaign.

EA Sports allowed players to dress their team in free rainbow colored uniforms as part of the Rainbow Laces campaign, an action to try to eradicate homophobia in football.

However, the rainbow kit was only available until 28 November.

Despite this, the officials have called on the agency to ban the game in Russia as it could ‘harm children’s health and development’.

Irina Rodnina, a former figure skater from United Russia, was a leading voice to get the game banned.

‘Every state has its internal laws and order; they need to be obeyed,’ she said, according to Isvestia.

Communist MP Valery Rashkin said the authorities should order the game’s developer, EA Canada, to ‘introduce changes to the programming code or the age classification of this information product, and if it refuses, adopt corresponding restrictive measures’.

It’s not just Russians either. Homophobic video game players all over the world have ‘rage quit’ FIFA 17 in numerous posts online.

The ‘gay propaganda’ law has led to many individuals and groups being fined for ‘promoting homosexuality to children’. It also led to the closure of Children 404, an online support group for LGBT teens.

However, larger companies have done better. When it was argued Apple should be fined for including gay emojis in a recent update, a Moscow court threw the complaint out.
