Like most guys, you probably want smooth, unblemished skin. As the years pass, good skin becomes harder and harder to retain. Fortunately, there’s help available.
Check out the following eight tips for maintaining vibrant, young skin despite the passage of time.
1. Eat healthy foods
Every inch of your body is affected by what you put in it. Your skin requires plenty of nutrients, which are primarily obtained from food.
So eat a good diet with plenty of lean proteins, fresh vegetables, and fruit, but relatively few fatty or processed foods.
2. Drink water
Skin needs hydration for elasticity and strength. Individual skin cells require lots of water to filter out damaging substances and process critical nutrients through cell walls.
Toxins and metabolic waste will stay in your skin if you don’t consume enough water, so drink on up.
The surface of your skin needs moisture too. Dry skin should be treated with a good moisturizer on a daily basis.
If you have issues with acne and breakouts, choose a moisturizer that isn’t too oily. Keep things simple, since using too many products can do more harm than good.
4. Be gentle
Treating your skin harshly is harmful. It might seem like a good idea to scrub your skin vigorously, but strong soaps remove beneficial layers of oil.
Similarly, bathing in warm, rather than very hot water will keep your skin in better condition. When shaving, go with the grain of the skin and use a clean razor and shaving cream or gel.
If you have acne, don’t mess with it — pimple popping can result in swelling, infection, and even scars.
5. Don’t touch your face
Your face is especially sensitive to dirt and oils, which clog up pores and cause breakouts. Unfortunately, most people’s hands aren’t very clean, so refrain from touching your face as much as you can.
Keep your hair out of your face as well.
6. Don’t smoke
Smoking is as bad for skin as it is for the rest of the body. Your skin will be lined and older-looking if you smoke regularly.
Part of the problem is that smoking narrows the blood vessels that carry vital nutrients and oxygen to the skin.
Plus, smoking damages collagen and elastin, two structural proteins that preserve the skin’s strength and elasticity by helping hold together connective tissue.
7. Protect your skin from sun damage
The sun might allow life to exist, but it is still bad for your skin. Sunlight damages skin, causing it to age and wrinkle quicker. Worse, the likelihood of skin cancer is increased by ultraviolet sunrays.
You might think you look better with a tan, but you’ll regret it later.
Wear sunscreen every time you are in the sun for an extended time, and apply another layer every few hours. Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more is best.
Hats and other protective clothing aren’t a bad idea, either.
8. Live well
A strong, healthy body results in better skin, too. Getting enough sleep helps your body produce collagen, while exercise aids circulation. Improved circulation means additional nutrients and oxygen for your skin.
Meanwhile, the less stress, the better your skin. Tension and anxiety can trigger breakouts and acne, or worsen skin conditions like eczema.
There’s nothing inevitable about the advent of bad skin, so don’t simply accept that your skin will look worse with time.
