Sperm Can Lower Depression
Does sperm help to fight off depression? That’s what one university is claiming.
First, we have to share a disclaimer to be fair and honest. Sadly, the study was only conducted on women, so we don’t know for sure if the same can be said for men.
With that said, lets dive into this this study, shall we?
The State of University of New York conducted a study to compare the sex lives of about 300 students.
The study went so far as the analyze the chemicals found within the students after having sex. The realized that the subjects who regularly had unprotected sex were less depressed.
On top of that, the results found that seminal fluid contained chemicals that raised the moods of the subjects, allowed them to sleep easier, and contained at least three “anti-depressants.” Earlier research showing that sperm contains chemicals like serotonin and melatonin slightly backs this idea up.
An excerpt from the study’s abstract:
“Not only were females who were having sex without condoms less depressed, but depressive symptoms and suicide attempts among females who used condoms were proportional to the consistency of condom use. For females who did not use condoms, depression scores went up as the amount of time since their last sexual encounter increased. These data are consistent with the possibility that semen may antagonize depressive symptoms and evidence which shows that the vagina absorbs a number of components of semen that can be detected in the bloodstream within a few hours of administration.”
That said, don’t take this study as the be all answer and stop having protected sex. Remember that STDs are still a prevalent problem for men engaging in sex. In fact, in some cases, like with Gonorrhea, STDs are becoming stronger and even unstoppable.
